Fabulous homemade cleansing balm

About this cleansing balm

This balm is relatively easy to make and requires only a few ingredients, however it did take me a few goes to get this right. Please be patient as you add the oil phase to gel – this must be done very slowly.  In addition Sapogel Q must be at a concentration of 15% to produce a balm. I do not add a fragrance myself however you can add an essential oil of your choice at the percentage below given you will be washing this off and it will be quite safe for use.

Notes

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is a lightweight, non greasy emollient derived from coconut oil and glycerin, widely used in cosmetics to soften skin, boost hydration, and enhance product texture. It acts as a stable, antioxidant-rich solvent and thickener that does not clog pores, making it ideal for sensitive and acne-prone skin.

To create grams from percentages, use the following formula: 15/100 x 50 = 7.50 grams

Method

Essential oil is optional – given you will be washing this off your face, essential oil at this percentage will be fine, however if you have sensitive skin it may be best to see how the unscented cleansing balm feels first. I do not add essential oil to my balm.

  1. Firstly measure out the Sapogel Q into a medium sized beaker
  2. In another medium sized beaker measure out the (a) Olive oil – choose organic and the best quality you can find. Having a deliciously thick oil works best for the balm, (b) measure out the Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, and  finally (c) the Vitamin E – again use a natural product.
  3. Mix the oils gently with a glass rod.
  4. The next stage is the most important for success. You will need a small whisk. Add a very small amount of the oil (pouring) into the Sapogel Q, then whisk until it combines into a thick glossy mixture. Only once it has combined, add more oil but only a small amount, and keep doing this. It should take you 15 minutes. If you add too much oil then it will not combine, and you will waste your Sapogel Q. I have practiced and failed many times – the key is to be very patient and only add a small amount.
  5. Measure out your preservative and mix in and essential oil if you choose to use this.
  6. Add this to a jar and keep in your bathroom for use.

How to use

A Balm cleanser is most satisfying to use, especially when homemade. With your finger or spatular add balm to your face and massage into your face. It should feel quite luxurious. Then place your hands under the tap, rub your hands together, and then rub your hands gently on your face and massage into your skin. This should produce a slightly white film on your face. You can massage in for 30 seconds or more. Then rinse off with water. I usually use cotton wool to wipe off my face and then rise with water, and gently towel dry.

I have acne prone skin and using this does not cause me to break out at all but leaves my skin feeling soft and clean.
