How to prepare a nourishing Vanilla Lip Balm

This lip balm recipe is incredibly easy to make and nourishing for the lips.

To get the vanilla fragrance I have infused real vanilla pods into high-quality, cold-pressed almond oil –  if you are allergic to nuts please use another carrier oil to infuse. I chose almond oil because it is super nourishing as it deeply moisturises with Vitamin E and fatty acids – it also has a plumping effect on your lips.

I chose vanilla because I love the fragrance – it is delightfully calming and contains antioxidants for protection, is hydrating, as well as having anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. I will provide another recipe to show you the infusion process.

  • Coconut Oil (source organic and unrefined. This is also known as virgin coconut oil)
  • Beeswax (source product from chemical free bee keeping operations). Purchase beads as they are much easier to work with)
  • Mango Butter (source organic, unrefined and deodorised. This removes the smell and retains the high nutritional content)
  • Castor Oil (source organic and  hexane free)
  • Vitamin E – naturally sources as it maintains it’s nutirional content
  • Essential oil – organic if possible

    Instructions

    1. Sterilise: Using the 70% isopropyl alcohol solution, spray working surface, equipment and lip balm tubes and allow to dry
    2. Beeswax: Place beaker on scales and tare to bring the scales back to zero grams. Weigh out your beeswax. Please note that the beeswax takes longer to melt than other ingredients
    3. Ingredients: Add the coconut oil, mango butter and caster oil to the beaker. Use a separate lab spoon for each ingredient. Remember to ‘tare’ the scales each time you add a new ingredient. Stir with whist or stirring rod until combined
    4. Heat: Place the beaker in the small pan of boiling water until all ingredients are melted
    5. Essential oil: Once the combined
    6. ingredients have cooled but not solidified, add the essential oil and mix thoroughly
    7. Pour: The combined ingredients carefully into each lip balm tube to the top and allow to cool
    8. Test: The fifth tube is your tester – it will not be completely full. Once cooled add the lids and product labels.
